The first honours belong to Nissos beer (ΝΗΣΟΣ) from the Greek island of Tinos. No particular reason for that. Just the first beer in my notes and which I’ve tried during my short stay in Greece. Before my review, a brief history about the brewery.
Cyclades Microbrewery began its story in 2012 by Alex Kouris and his wife Maja Tsokli in the island of Tinos. You can read more about the story behind the brand here: http://nissos.beer/story/ . Basically it’s a craft brewery in the small village of Vaia in Tinos built with a lot of love aparrently and that shows in the whole marketing strategy and the whole idea that it represents the island of Tinos, Cyclades and the whole Aegean culture. And in many ways it does. In its first 3 years of production it reached even the Australian market (!) and the beer also was awarded the silver medal in the “European Beer Star” competition amongst 1,613 beers from 42 countries. Not a small task if you ask me.
I have tried the Pilsner Nissos which was awarded the award. For each beer that I try I will put the official beer description notes from the producer and then my remarks and score. Here we go:
“Appearance: Crystal clear with a rich golden color. Rich white head and lacing. Normal carbonation for the style”
fromGR2UK: I wouldn’t say crystal clear, but with a deep golden colour and low carbonation
“Aroma: Malty, with a presence of hops. Very clean. Touches of herbs and pepper”
fromGR2UK: Malty yes but hoppy? Not really. Extremely clean and quite indifferent.
“Taste and Body: Full body. Refreshing mouthfeel. Good carbonation. Sweet malty start, rounding off with a pleasant bitterness. Very drinkable and well balanced”
fromGR2UK: Full body indeed and refreshing. Too balanced for my taste. But I can see it being a summer hit as it’s extremely drinkable
My score: 3/5
