Britain’s tendency to self-destruct
There was a paper leaked this week displaying all the negative impact that Brexit will have to facets of economic life in the next 15 years(!). Even the best scenario of a soft Brexit will see the GDP shrink by 2%. Worse scenario is that we lose 8% of our GDP. Source here: https://goo.gl/j8K8pK from the Guardian. Of course the government and the pro-Brexit media are trying to play this down as much as possible and discredit it as much as possible and maybe they have a point. It’s just a forecast and its bias can be questioned as well as its results. But what if it’s true? The main argument of the Brexiteers is that ‘see? we have Brexit and everything is fine’. Well firstly it’s not fine as inflation and cost of living have increased significantly, as hate crimes have increased and as the overall pessimism has increased and secondly it’s not fine by a mile because Brexit hasn’t even happened yet! I mean how difficult is it for some people to comprehend the fact that we don’t have exited the EU yet? That will happen after the short-term agreement, probably in 2020 (source: https://goo.gl/NsNpkE) .
But no. There’s no logic with these people. Every day they are trying to convince us that they know better. The same rhetoric is being heard over and over again. About ‘getting their country back’, about ‘getting back control of their borders’ and so on and so forth the stereotypes keep rushing in. And every voice of reason by experts and economy scientists is treated as rubbish because they don’t trust experts and they don’t believe in anything but their dogmatic belief that Britain does not need the EU. And Theresa May arrogantly says that there will be no freedom of movement for EU citizens after Brexit but they want a trade deal with the EU. They want everything their way! There’s no reasoning with them. And it’s not just EU citizens living in the UK that will be affected. It’s around 4 million UK citizens living and working in the EU as well. They don’t care about them either.
“And what of us? We are seemingly on our own and will have to take our chances, abandoned by the government of our birth country. Jointly we are over 4 million people who, through no fault of our own, have been relegated to the second or third division in the citizenship stakes and left to languish.” EU citizens in the UK are equally horrified. They say without a registration system in place employees, hospitals, social welfare and immigrations officials will have no way of distinguishing between those who have been in the country legally up to 29 March 2019 and new arrivals. May’s plan will also hit anyone leaving and returning to the country on holidays or business. Source: The Guardian https://goo.gl/b6tvbh
